Uzbekistan to Hold Nationwide “Car-Free Day” Environmental Campaign
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — On 25 May, a nationwide environmental campaign titled “Car-Free Day” will be held across all regions of Uzbekistan.
The initiative aims to reduce harmful emissions into the atmosphere, promote environmentally friendly transport, and foster a culture of environmental responsibility.
The campaign is being implemented in accordance with Presidential Decree No. 46 dated March 25, 2026, “On measures to implement the nationwide Clean Air project aimed at improving atmospheric air quality.”
According to the document, “Car-Free Day” and “Car-Free Week” campaigns are held across the country on the 10th and 25th of each month starting from May 1 this year.
During the campaign, the use of official vehicles by state organizations and agencies is prohibited. If the campaign falls on a working day, drivers’ salaries are maintained.
The main objective of the initiative is to reduce emissions from vehicles, improve air quality, protect public health, and promote a more sustainable lifestyle.
Special attention is also given to increasing the use of public transport, bicycles, walking, and other environmentally friendly modes of transport.
A special commission protocol has been adopted to coordinate the measures. According to the established rules, the use of official transport by civil servants during campaign days will be considered a violation of service ethics.
Failure to comply with the requirements may result in disciplinary action by the heads of relevant state bodies and organizations.
Experts note that such initiatives are part of a broader environmental policy aimed at reducing air pollution, especially in large cities.
An additional basis for strengthening environmental measures is Presidential Decree No. UP–229 dated November 25, 2025, “On urgent measures to improve the environmental situation in the city of Tashkent,” which granted the Special Commission powers to restrict vehicle movement.
As part of the campaign, educational events, mass walks, eco-flash mobs, and public initiatives are also planned across the regions to raise environmental awareness among the population.
Organizers have called on employees of government organizations, educational institutions, and the general public to support the campaign and contribute to a cleaner and safer environment in the country.
