Sports 11/11/2008 Zico’s take on Uzbek football
Zico
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- Bunyodkor’s Brazilian coach Zico believes Uzbekistan needs a more competitive elite league if the country wants to be among the leading countries in Asia.

After leading his team to their first victory in the Uzbekistan Cup, Zico said other clubs need to do more to challenge the dominance of Bunyodkor and Pakhtakor.

Speaking to www.the-afc.com, the former Japan coach said: “I have been to many countries and am not surprised to see the level of football in Uzbekistan.

“The level of the local championship is high here but only two clubs (Pakhtakor and Bunyodkor) are fighting for the crown in the league,” said the Brazilian.

“This is a problem. It’s not enough. “There are a lot of good players in the national team but it is not enough to be one of the strongest sides in Asia,” added Zico.

Zico recently guided Bunyodkor to their maiden silverware when they beat giants Pakhtakor 3-1 in the Uzbekistan Cup.

Bunyodkor also lead the Uzbek league ahead of defending champions Pakhtakor.

Uzbekistan is among the Member Associations trying to qualify for next year’s revamped AFC Champions League, which has laid down strict entry requirements to ensure clubs are professionally run and competitive.

Zico also urged Uzbek players to seek opportunities outside the country in order to enhance their skills.

“If you look at other teams like Japan, Australia and Korea, their main players play in strong European leagues. Players gain good experience by playing in Europe and can help the national team.”

“Most of the Uzbekistan national team players ply their trade in the domestic league and that’s why they are not one of the strongest in Asia,” said Zico.
