World media focus on the national convention of the US Republican Party

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- A landmark national congress of the Republican Party is being held in the United States, during which the incumbent head of state Donald Trump was nominated as a candidate for the presidency in the upcoming elections, and the candidacy of the current vice president M. Pence was approved for the post of vice president.

The four-day congress will last until 27 August. Unlike the Democrats, who held their convention virtually, the Republicans organized two events. Party representatives met in Charlotte, North Carolina, and speakers’ speeches are held online.

I. In accordance with the agenda of the congress, a large number of speeches by associates and relatives of the current president are envisaged. Their main goal is to convince the Americans that Donald Trump should be re-elected for a second term.

The Republicans’ program of speeches is longer than that of the Democrats: J. Biden’s supporters had two hours of TV broadcasts a day, and Republicans - two and a half hours a day.

In this context, the Republicans initially had an advantage - they had the opportunity to familiarize themselves with the course of the Democratic Congress and draw their conclusions from its successful and unsuccessful episodes. Thus, one of the lessons learned is that the speeches of ordinary Americans are more interesting and more useful than the verified speeches of politicians.

An American K. Urkiza, whose father died after contracting the coronavirus, spoke at the Democratic congress. According to her, her father was healthy a 65-year-old man who “paid with his life”, trusting Donald Trump. This phrase is now quoted by the media and Democratic activists on social media.

On the first day of the republican convention, three people spoke at once from the people - a married couple who became famous defending their home with weapons in their hands during the anti-racist Black Lives Matter protests, and an ordinary American whose daughter was killed during a mass execution by one of the students in school in Parkland, Florida in 2018.

The floor was also given to D. Trump Jr., the son of the head of state, who called J. Biden a "monster from the swamps" and predicted the collapse of his confrontation with China in the event of a Democrat’s victory.

Speaking to the voters, the president’s relatives noted his characteristics and achievements. Melanie Trump called her husband "a man of action", saying that "he does not throw empty words, but requires action and achieves results."

In contrast to the isolated house of J. Biden, President Trump himself came to the congress, speaking to the audience with an hour-long speech. At the same time, he avoided saying that he was accepting the nomination for the elections, since, according to the procedure, he had to do this only on the final day of the congress (on 27 August). The President devoted the main part of his speech to criticism of voting by mail, said that the country was coping well with the COVID-19 epidemic, mentioned the "almost finished" wall on the border with Mexico and stressed that under President Barack Obama, the country was split even more than it is today.

Former US Permanent Representative to the UN N. Haley noted that Trump deserves to be re-elected to the second term. She restrainedly commented on the agenda of the presidential candidate J. Biden and did not use offensive epithets in relation to the Democratic opponents. Her balanced speech gave the media a reason to say that N. Haley could become a presidential candidate in 2024.

The speech of the presidential adviser on economics L. Cadlow was devoted to the development of the United States. He noted that “the country’s economic performance before the start of the pandemic was impressive. The pandemic was a blow to the economy, but the president quickly took steps to save it. "

In his speech, Senator R. Paul noted that D. Trump seeks to end the war in Afghanistan. In his words, “J. Biden supported the war in Serbia, Syria and Libya, voted for the war in Iraq, which the current president called the worst geopolitical mistake made by our generation. J. Biden will choose war again, and D. Trump will return the American military home. "

Thus, the main goal of the Republicans who spoke was to demonstrate a positive agenda for the country’s development and the solution of the current internal and external problems.

On the final day, Donald Trump will officially accept the party’s offer to run for the presidency of the United States and will deliver a keynote speech, on the success of which his further chances will largely depend.

II. The world media and experts, analyzing the results of the Republican Congress, highlight a number of points.

The Washington Post notes that the Republican Party, unlike the Democratic Party, held a number of face-to-face events, which allowed Trump’s team to attract a large audience and effectively present their ideas and agenda. At the same time, some restrictions became a significant "gesture" for those who criticized the current president’s disregard for anti-coronavirus isolation measures. On the eve of the congress, Donald Trump also publicly demanded that US regulators issue an emergency permission to use the blood plasma of recovered patients to treat COVID-19 patients.

At the same time, according to Reuters, Donald Trump’s team is trying to demonstrate its economic success and defend the country’s trade interests during the congress. On 25 August 2020, xonstructive negotiations between representatives of the United States and China took place, following which the parties pledged to adhere to the agreements on the first phase of the "trade deal".

However, a number of experts speak of the failure of the congress, as Donald Trump was unable to enlist the support of the party’s leading figures. For example, ex-US President George W. Bush and influential Senator M. Romney refused to participate in the work of the congress. For the first time, a presidential candidate has not been personally supported by any of the living ex-presidents.

In this regard, The New York Times believes that the congress of the Republican Party is a decisive moment for Donald Trump, who loses to J. Biden in opinion polls. Voters are not yet impressed by Donald Trump’s campaign activity.

In general, the congress is taking place in a difficult period for the Republican Party of a decline in economic indicators and an increase in unemployment due to a pandemic, on which Donald Trump made the main stake of his presidency. Under these conditions, it is likely that his political agenda for achieving victory will be distinguished by extreme aggressiveness towards J. Biden.
