World Bank issues US$93m loan to Uzbek health project
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- The World Bank’s Board of Executive Directors approved a loan to Uzbekistan for US$93 million to implementation of the Health System Improvement Project on 7 April 2011.

The project is directed to health system performance in delivery of efficient and quality essential health services and its ability to address the pending epidemic of chronic non-communicable diseases.

It is expected that the project will consists of four components. First component will focus on improving health service delivery and the second component - strengthening health financing and management reforms.

Third component envisages improvement of public health service delivery and fourth is project management.

The loan was issued due to resources of the International Development Association (IDA). The loan issued for 35 years with 10-year grace period.

Uzbekistan and the World Bank realized Health- 1 project in 1998-2004. The project cost was US$76 million, of which US$30 million was loan of International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD).

IDA also issued US$40 million to implementation of Health-2 project with the cost of US$118.09 million. The loan was approved in September 2004.

Uzbekistan joined the World Bank in 1992. The World Bank’s mission in the country is to improve people’s livelihoods through being a partner in economic reforms, supporting the modernization of the country’s social sectors and infrastructure, and sharing its knowledge and experience with the government and the people of Uzbekistan.
