Wine tourism in Uzbekistan grows as a distinct sector

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — In Uzbekistan, agritourism is an emerging sector that places particular emphasis on sustainable agriculture and organic production, attracting tourists interested in eco-friendly products and ecotourism.

Wine tourism, as a subfield of agritourism, involves exploring the winemaking traditions of a particular region.

Efforts are underway to promote the Uzbek national wine brand among tourists visiting Uzbekistan. To advance wine tourism, a list of enterprises specializing in this type of tourism was created by December 2024. In Samarkand, there are 9 such enterprises, in Tashkent — 3, and in Bukhara and Fergana — 1 each. These facilities have been developed to accommodate tourists and are included in tourism programs carried out in collaboration with tourist organizations.

One notable establishment is the joint venture Ferghana France LLC, located in the city of Fergana, which produces high-quality dry white and red wines, wine products, brandy, and vodka. The winery cultivates various grape varieties across an area of more than 500 hectares.

The facility has created all necessary conditions for foreign tourists wishing to visit and taste the products. Ferghana France also offers a range of services, including a leisure base and hotel named Family Compleks, an open and closed-type restaurant called Wine Garden, tasting rooms, shopping centers, and vineyards.

Other popular wine tourism destinations include the Bogizagan winery plantation in the Tylok district, part of the "tourist route" of the Samarkand region, and the M.A. Khovrenko Winery’s wine museum in Samarkand. The Bogizagan vineyards grow numerous grape varieties, including Cabernet, Merlot, Chardonnay, Rkatsiteli, Kuljinsky, and Bajan Shirei. Visitors can witness the grape processing and wine production technology and participate in wine tastings.

The Tourism Committee has established partnerships with the Antalya Tourism Academy (Turkey), the Russian State University of Tourism and Service, the Georgian Wine Tourism Association, the Italian company "Marchesi Frescobaldi," and the "Il Santuccio" wine association.

Various festivals and exhibitions are held to promote the winemaking sector of Uzbekistan. The International Wine Festival Uzum Sayli takes place annually in the Parkent district of Tashkent province, drawing scholars and experts from 35 countries. The Tashkent International Tourism Fair Tourism on the Silk Road also features tourism administrations and private organizations from over 20 countries. These events showcase Uzbekistan’s wine tourism potential and its local wine production.
