WHO calls the disruption of COVID-19 vaccination plans in September a global failure

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- Failure of the goal set by the World Health Organization (WHO) to cover at least 10% of the population of all countries of the world with coronavirus vaccination by the end of September is a global failure. WHO Director General Tedros Adanom Ghebreyesus wrote about this on Friday on his Twitter page, TASS reports.

The head of WHO recalled that in May of this year, the organization outlined the task of achieving vaccination of at least 10% of residents in all countries of the world. "However, 56 countries did not do this, although this is not their fault. Half of these countries vaccinated only 2%. The fact that the task of vaccinating 10% of the population has not been completed is a global failure," the director general stressed.

Tedros Ghebreyesus believes that the disruption of vaccination plans in September should prompt the world community to do everything possible to achieve the other two goals set by WHO - coverage of COVID-19 vaccinations for at least 40% of all countries by the end of 2021 and at least 70% by mid-2022.

These goals are achievable, the WHO head said, if countries keep their pledge to share vaccines and vaccine technologies, and if intellectual property rights to drugs are suspended and supplies are prioritized for the international COVAX mechanism and the African Vaccine Task Force.

According to WHO, as of 30 September, 233 136 147 cases of COVID-19 infection and 4 771 408 deaths have been registered in the world since the beginning of the pandemic.
