“We all adore Khusanov”, says Guardiola
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — Uzbek defender Abdulkodir Khusanov, who joined Manchester City in January, delivered an outstanding performance to help secure a clean sheet in Wednesday’s hard-fought victory over Tottenham Hotspur.
Erling Haaland’s goal proved decisive, earning City all three points in north London. Despite dominating the first half, the team was unable to fully capitalize on its chances. In the second half, the hosts gained momentum, requiring a strong defensive effort—including six crucial saves from Ederson—to see out the win.
Although just six games into his Manchester City career, Khusanov has already impressed Pep Guardiola, not only with his technical ability but also with his character and attitude.
Speaking in his post-match press conference, Guardiola praised the young defender’s mindset, sharing a lighthearted anecdote about his singular focus on football.
"Today, he traveled without a toothbrush or a washbag—nothing at all. He arrived just to play football," the manager said with a smile.
Beyond his performances on the pitch, Khusanov has quickly become a valued presence in the dressing room.
Guardiola highlighted his positive energy, saying, "When you talk to him, he just laughs all the time. But at the same time, he’s a reliable player—so fast, so quick. His passing quality is extraordinary, and he has a great ability to break the lines. There’s still room for improvement, but he’s only 20."
The City boss also emphasized the young defender’s humility and work ethic, noting that his teammates have already embraced him. "People adore him. He’s quiet, never complains, and is incredibly humble. I’m sure our fans will love him too."
Guardiola acknowledged the challenges Khusanov has faced early in his City career, referencing his difficult start against Chelsea. "It’s not easy to recover from what happened just five minutes into that game, but he stayed calm and handled it well," he said.
"In the matches he’s played recently, he’s been really, really good," Pep Guardiola concluded.
