Uzbekistan’s grapplers rule the mat on the opening day
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- It was the grapplers from Uzbekistan, who ruled day one of the Asian Cadet Wrestling Championship with four gold, two silver and one bronze at Shiv Chhatrapati Sports Complex in Balewadi. Meanwhile, host India had to satisfy with the three silver medals from Santosh Yadav, Sandeep and Harpreet in their respective weight categories.

In the 46kg weight category, Yadav lost against Iran’s Mohammad Gholami on points (7-0). In the first round, Yadav failed to take advantage of the clinch situation and awarded one point to his opponent. In the second round, Gholami was perfect in his technique and garnered six points to grab the yellow metal.

In the 50kg category, Uzbekistan’s Firuz Tukhtaev defeated India’s Sandeep 3-0. “I feel there were some mistakes in our planning. I was going right, but in the second round, he capitalised the situation and the gold slipped away from my hand,” said Sandeep, after his bout.

All eyes were set on Harpreet, who was playing against Ruslan Kamilov of Uzbekistan in the 85kg category. However, he disappointed the supporters and lost the match in the first round.

“Most of our wrestlers have shifted to the Greco-Roman style from free style. On the other hand, the wrestlers from other countries have been focusing on the Greco-Roman style right from the start,” said the coach of the Indian camp Krushna Patil.
