Uzbekistan’s Debut at WSIS+20: Digital Development and Media Potential
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — From 7 to 11 July 2025, the WSIS+20 Summit is taking place in Geneva, Switzerland, with a delegation from Uzbekistan’s Center for Progressive Reforms (CPR) participating. WSIS+20, or the World Summit on the Information Society, is held under the auspices of the United Nations.
The summit serves as a global platform for discussing digital development, ICT policy progress, and fostering inclusive dialogue. The 2025 forum marks the 20th anniversary of the WSIS initiative and brings together representatives from governments, international organizations, civil society, academia, and the private sector worldwide.
For the first time at the summit, on 10 July, the Center for Progressive Reforms will organize a special panel session titled “Media and ICT Development in Uzbekistan: Digital Inclusion and Infrastructure Strengthening.”
During the session, Uzbekistan’s achievements in digitalization, the creation of a sustainable information society, and the country’s national experience in these fields will be presented.
Speakers include CPR Director Mirshokhid Aslanov, his deputy Kadambay Sultanov, and Ummatoy Yuldasheva, coordinator of the “Digital Generation Uzbekistan” initiative.
Participants will learn about key reforms aimed at implementing a human-centered electronic governance system and expanding access to digital services. Particular attention will be given to ensuring openness of digital infrastructure to all segments of the population and creating an inclusive, reliable media ecosystem that guarantees the right to access information. The crucial role of digital tools—such as participatory budgeting and electronic petitions—in strengthening state-civil society interaction will also be emphasized.
Mirshokhid Aslanov stated: “For reforming countries like Uzbekistan, it is extremely important for civil society to have the opportunity to make its voice heard on the global stage. International platforms like WSIS+20 create unique conditions for sharing experiences, discussing current challenges, and implementing digital transformations based on openness and inclusivity.”
The participation of CPR at WSIS+20 highlights the growing role of Uzbekistan’s civil society in the global digital agenda. The Center is actively engaged in international dialogue, relying on an analytical approach, and strives to contribute to building a fair, sustainable, and future-oriented digital environment.
