Uzbekistani parliament holds hearings on MDGs implementation
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- Legislative Chamber of Oliy Majlis of Uzbekistan held a parliamentary hearings on implementation of Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) of the United Nations in Uzbekistan on 9 September 2010, the press service of the parliament’s lower house said.

The Committee on democratic institutes, non-governmental organizations and self-governing bodies, Committee on international affairs and inter-parliamentary cooperation organized the hearings, which was aimed at revealing effective ways on further improving reforms and democratic transformations in public-political and economic life of Uzbekistan.

Members of Senate of Oliy Majlis and the government, heads of ministries and departments, scientists, representatives of various organization, civil society institutes, as well as media were invited to the hearings.

Members of the Uzbekistani government delivered reports on implementation of the MDGs. Legislative Chamber underlined effectiveness of selected model of democratic reforming, directed to modernization of Uzbekistan. It was underlined that all reforms in economy, politics and state-legal spheres are directed at raising population’s well-being, creation all necessary opportunities for professional, intellectual and spiritual growth of citizens in clean environment.

Wide-scale work, carried out by the government in last ten years, ensured comprehensive implementation of the UN’s MDGs.

In education sphere, Uzbekistan realized unique National programme on training of specialists, transfer to 12-year education system, carried out measures on cardinal and systematic improvement of education quality.

The government guarantees general education. Education coverage of children between age of 7 and 15 and literacy level of population corresponds to absolute values, which means Uzbekistan fulfilled goal of MDGs on increasing quality of education in elementary and secondary schools.

In recent years, Uzbekistan almost fully modernized medical service system and create specialized networks of hospitals and its branches.

Institute of public control is becoming important tool for ensuring effective communication of public with the government, improving well-being of population, competitiveness of economy, protection of human rights and freedoms, etc, the hearings noted. The meeting noted that targeted legislative work is key and important for further democratization and libertization of public life, modernization of economy and transformation of social sphere. During independence years, the parliament adopted over 500 laws, ratified over 100 international agreements, including six main UN documents on human rights and human development.

The participants determined perspective directions of further improvement of legislative base in liberalization of political and social-economic life of Uzbekistan, effective monitoring MDGs implementation in Uzbekistan.
