Uzbekistan to join to Second Optional Protocol of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- Legislative Chamber of Oliy Majlis of Uzbekistan (lower house of parliament approved a draft law “On accession of Uzbekistan to the Second Optional Protocol of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, aiming at the abolition of the death penalty (New York, 15 December 1989)”.

The protocol says that “no one within the jurisdiction of a State Party to the present Protocol shall be executed and each State Party shall take all necessary measures to abolish the death penalty within its jurisdiction.”

Uzbekistan abolished death penalty from January 2008. The document will be sent to Senate for approval.
