Uzbekistan 29/05/2009 Uzbekistan to chair Interstate Commission on Sustainable Development

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- Uzbekistan will chair the Interstate Commission on Sustainable Development (ICSD) for next two years. The country took over chairmanship from Kyrgyzstan.

ICSD members met in Tashkent on 26 May and the decision on the chairmanship was adopted at the meeting.

Participants discussed issues of organizing the Secretariat on frame convention on sustainable development in Central Asia, and its activity, which might be supported by United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). Members agreed on formation of UNEP office in Central Asian region. The sides will decide the location of the office in nearest future.

ICSD members also discussed future strategy and perspectives of activity on biodiversity preservation in the region within the frameworks of projects of World Wildlife Fund, preparation to the conference of Asia Pacific region Ministers of environmental protection in 2010 in Astana (Kazakhstan) and other large forums.

Interstate Commission on Sustainable Development (ICSD) was formed on 26 May 1993, in correspondence with agreement signed by Central Asian states leaders. About 15 years ago, the member states united in order to mutually solve problems, related to Aral crisis, cooperate in ecological enhancement, and providing socio-economic development of Central Asian region.
