Uzbekistan strengthens international cooperation in insurance with UNDP support

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — A delegation from Uzbekistan’s National Agency for Perspective Projects (NAPP), with support from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), conducted a study visit to Switzerland.

During the visit, productive meetings were held with representatives of the International Association of Insurance Supervisors (IAIS), as well as leading global companies in reinsurance, insurance, and risk management, including Swiss Re and Europe Re.

IAIS comprises over 200 members overseeing more than 97% of global insurance premiums. Uzbekistan’s accession to this organization would be a significant step toward strengthening its national insurance market, enhancing transparency, and boosting competitiveness. Membership will facilitate the adoption of advanced regulatory and supervisory practices, foster the development of digital technologies (InsurTech), provide access to analytical data and best global practices, and increase the country's international presence in the insurance sector.

Key discussion topics included IAIS’s strategic plan for 2025–2029 and its roadmap for 2025–2026, Uzbekistan’s potential membership and its impact on the national insurance market, the development of NAPP in alignment with international standards, and the benefits IAIS membership would bring to the country’s insurance industry. Additionally, participants explored global practices in climate risk management, financing mechanisms, and potential partnerships with Swiss Re and Europe Re in agricultural insurance, risk management, and the development of Uzbekistan’s reinsurance market.

NAPP Deputy Director Orifjon Faiziev emphasized the importance of engagement with IAIS, stating that the agency is committed to strengthening cooperation with IAIS and its members to enhance the regulatory framework of Uzbekistan’s insurance sector.

The study visit was organized under the UNDP global project “Implementation of Insurance and Risk Financing Mechanisms in Uzbekistan,” funded by the German government. The project aims to support the development of the insurance market, integrate insurance instruments into national economic policy, expand inclusive insurance, finance sovereign and natural disaster risks, and attract investment in the insurance industry.

Collaboration with leading international organizations opens new opportunities for Uzbekistan’s insurance sector, promotes the adoption of advanced solutions, and enhances the country's economic resilience to external risks.
