Uzbekistan starts with victory over Indonesia
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- Uzbekistan began their AFC U-16 Championship campaign in impressive style, cruising home to a 3-0 win over Indonesia in their Group A opener at Pakhtakor stadium on Sunday.

Timur Khakimov’s double on either side of the break gave the home crowd plenty to cheer about while Sardor Sabirkhodjaev’s strike in the latter stages rounded off a sublime performance from the hosts.

Coach Aleksey Evstafeev’s side now face Jordan on Tuesday, with Indonesia looking to get back into the running with a clash against Tajikistan.

Uzbekistan made most of the early running but were unlucky not to be ahead after nine minutes when striker Khakimov cut in from the right only for his curling left-footed shot to come off the post.

Chances came thick and fast for the hosts, Bobber Davlatov’s piercing through ball found Zabikhillo Urinboev on the left but his shot was well saved by Indonesian custodian Achmad Kurniawan.

Seventeen minutes gone and Abbosbek Makhstaliev found himself in the thick of things inside the box and only a frenetic scramble in the box prevented a goal, as Kurniawan managed to smother the ball.

Urinboev was the next to hit the woodwork, his header from a 19th minute corner coming off the bar with Kurniawan beaten on his line.

And the hosts’ efforts finally bore fruit on the half-hour mark, when an unmarked Khakimov heading in from close range after a beautiful cross from the left by Azizbek Murotov.

Dovlatov came close to scoring three minutes from the break, his effort from outside the box going perilously close to the post, with a diving Kurniawan nowhere close to the shot.

Uzbekistan got off to the best possible start in the second half with Khakimov grabbing his brace in the 46th minute, controlling the ball superbly on his chest in the box before firing home from the tightest of angles.

The hosts continued to pile on the pressure and after the hour mark, Indonesia failed to clear a corner from the right allowing Sabirkhodjaev to latch on to a lay-off inside the box to power home Uzbekistan’s third.

Indonesia came close to reducing the deficit in the 67th minute, but striker Angga Febryanto Putra’ s dipping shot from outside the box was well tipped over by Uzbek goalkeeper Ganisher Kholmurodov.

And despite a late rally from Indonesia, Uzbekistan, however, never looked in danger of conceding and the final whistle was greeted with rapturous applause from the crowd as the hosts outlined their championship credentials.
