Uzbekistan proposes tougher penalties for repeat traffic offenders

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — The Ministry of Internal Affairs has drafted a bill introducing stricter penalties for drivers who systematically violate traffic rules.

The document stresses that repeated serious offenses—such as driving into oncoming traffic, running red lights, and significant speeding—are among the main causes of the growing number of road accidents with severe consequences. The ministry also notes that some drivers show disregard for traffic culture and disrespect toward other road users.

According to the draft law, if a driver commits ten serious violations within one month—including exceeding the speed limit by 40–60 km/h, running a red light, or causing a dangerous situation that forces others to abruptly change their course—then, for the final offense, the driver will additionally lose the right to operate a vehicle for six months.

The ministry is confident that adopting the law will improve discipline on the roads and reduce the number of accidents with serious consequences.

The draft law will remain open for public discussion until 25 September.
