Uzbekistan plans to include three water reservoirs to Ramsar List
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- Uzbekistan is preparing a package of documents to include three water reservoirs to Ramsar List, Ecologic Movement of Uzbekistan said.

Currently, the work is underway to include three water reservoirs of Uzbekistan to Ramsar List. Among them are Sudochye lakes system (Karakalpakstan), flood-lands of Amudarya river near Termez (Surkhandarya region), and Achiqqul lake in Kashkadarya region.

Inclusion of these wetlands to the Ramsar List will allow to strengthen protection measures on above mentioned territories. The Ecologic Movement said that public can play key role in protection of wetlands.

The Convention on Wetlands (Ramsar, Iran, 1971) -- called the "Ramsar Convention" -- is an intergovernmental treaty that embodies the commitments of its member countries to maintain the ecological character of their Wetlands of International Importance and to plan for the "wise use", or sustainable use, of all of the wetlands in their territories.

Unlike the other global environmental conventions, Ramsar is not affiliated with the United Nations system of Multilateral Environmental Agreements, but it works very closely with the other MEAs and is a full partner among the "biodiversity-related cluster" of treaties and agreements.

The Ramsar List of Wetlands of International Importance now includes 1,950 sites (known as Ramsar Sites) covering around 1,836,000 km2 in 160 countries.

Uzbekistan joined the Ramsar Convention in line with the resolution of Oliy Majlis of Uzbekistan from 30 August 2001, which came into force on 2 February 2002.

Uzbekistan presently has 2 sites designated as Wetlands of International Importance, with a surface area of 558,400 hectares. The Ramsar List includes Lake Dengizkul and Aydar Arnasay Lakes System. Uzbekistan has about 1 million hectares of wetlands or 500 lakes.
