Uzbekistan 18/06/2007 Uzbekistan on "evolutionary path" - president

Uzbek President Islam Karimov has said that Uzbekistan is developing along an evolutionary path.

President Karimov who was talking to people in a village in central Bukhara Region, broadcast by Uzbek TV in a special programme on his visit to the region on 15 June, also said that he did not approve of the path of revolution.

He specifically said: "Every state develops in its own way. We have chosen our own path in Uzbekistan. We will build our future stage by stage. A shock therapy and things like that will not suit us. We cannot reach anything by jumping. We have chosen evolutionary, that is to say, stage-by-stage path. I do not like the path of revolution. Never. Have we made any person’s nose bleed over these years - in September, God willing, it will be 16 years [since the country gained independence] in September. Have we set someone against someone else? Have we allowed anyone to become very rich or very poor? I am asking these questions not for nothing. Society always comes to help the one who is in difficulty."

During a meeting with farmers in Romiton District, he touched on agricultural issues and specifically compared the newly-acquired German Class Dominator harvesters with the US CASE harvesters and praised the former. "If we compare the two [US Case and German Class Dominator harvesters], many things will become obvious. The first thing is their prices. That one [Case] costs more than US$200,000, and this one [Class dominator] is two times cheaper," Islam Karimov said.

At a meeting with local officials in the town of Bukhara he also ordered the authorities to define the boundaries of the town and do not allow the construction of new buildings in the areas where ancient buildings are situated.

Uzbek President Islam Karimov also visited a medical college, a bazaar, the Naqshbandiy mausoleum, and gave presents to children and a bus to an orphanage.
