Uzbekistan and World Bank discuss cooperation in geological sector development

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — A meeting took place between representatives of the Ministry of Economy and Finance of the Republic of Uzbekistan and the World Bank to discuss expanding cooperation in the geological sector.

The event was attended by Senior Mining Industry Specialist at the World Bank, Rémi Pellon, Bank Consultant on Mining and Geology, Francisco Iguaada, Deputy Minister of Economy and Finance Khurshed Mustafaev, as well as representatives of the Ministry of Mining and Geology.

During the negotiations, the development of Uzbekistan’s geological sector, attracting international investments, and the formation of sustainable supply chains were discussed.

World Bank representatives shared international experience in this field and highly appreciated the opportunities for developing geological research and attracting investments in Uzbekistan. They emphasized their support for the institutional reforms being carried out by the government in this area.

The main topics of discussion included the expansion and digitalization of geological research, the implementation of ESG standards, the training of qualified personnel, and the introduction of technological innovations.

In particular, it was proposed to create a centralized digital platform for collecting, systematizing, and effectively utilizing geological data. This platform is expected to facilitate the attraction of international investments to the sector.

Special attention was given to improving ESG standards in geological production and the mining industry, which will enhance the sector’s competitiveness on the international stage.

Programs aimed at developing skills and introducing innovative technologies to meet the demand for a qualified workforce in the mining and geological sectors were also considered.

World Bank representatives noted that this project provides Uzbekistan with unique opportunities for further developing its mining industry and emphasized the need to accelerate its implementation.

The Ministry of Economy and Finance expressed support for this initiative, highlighting that the project is not only important for modernizing the geological sector but also for attracting international investments to strategic sectors of the economy.

As a result of the meeting, the parties agreed to continue developing cooperation, ongoing consultations, and discussions on current projects.
