Uzbekistan and UNDP to continue cooperation in digitalization

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) —  A meeting was held between Uzbekistan’s Minister of Digital Technologies, Sherzod Shermatov, and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Resident Representative in Uzbekistan, Akiko Fujii.

The discussions focused on the current state of digitalization in the country and the opportunities that need to be created for young people, particularly girls, pursuing education in information technology.

Minister Shermatov emphasized that one of the Ministry’s main objectives is to provide employment opportunities for youth. He highlighted the use of information and communication technologies (ICT) in addressing various challenges. In particular, he noted that given Uzbekistan’s landlocked status, the Ministry is actively developing the IT sector, which has significantly boosted IT service exports.

Akiko Fujii commended Uzbekistan’s progress in various areas that have notably improved the quality of life for its citizens.

She also underscored the importance of jointly advancing STEM disciplines, especially encouraging young women to engage in these fields. Additionally, she highlighted the significance of collaboration in artificial intelligence development.

Minister Shermatov pointed out the Ministry’s focus on delivering government services online, with nearly 80% of such services already digitized.

He further stressed the importance of supporting women, individuals with disabilities, and low-income families, stating that these groups remain a top priority. He elaborated on initiatives under the "Digital Inclusion" project, implemented in cooperation with the World Bank.

The meeting concluded with both sides expressing gratitude and agreeing to continue their effective collaboration.
