Uzbekistan and the United States discuss commodity exchange regulation

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — On 5 November 2024, a meeting was held at the Committee for the Development of Competition and Consumer Rights with representatives from the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) and the Commercial Law Development Program (CLDP).

The meeting focused on strengthening cooperation between Uzbekistan and the U.S., regulating commodity exchanges, competition policy, and digital platforms.

The U.S. delegation included Kevin Piccoli, Deputy Director of the International Affairs Department at CFTC, and Nancy Doyle, Senior International Counsel at CFTC, as well as specialists from the U.S. Department of Commerce and CLDP international programs.

Halilillo Turakhudzhaev, Chairman of the Committee, emphasized the importance of reforms to develop commodity exchanges and introduce futures trading in Uzbekistan. He noted that modern trading mechanisms contribute to the further development of the economy, and cooperation in this area is key to enhancing the country’s trade and competitive capabilities.

Key areas of cooperation identified during the meeting include:

- Studying the U.S. experience in regulating commodity futures;

- Practical assistance in preparing legal regulations for futures trading;

- Capacity building for Committee staff;

- Exchange of experience in regulating digital platforms.

Following the meeting, important steps were outlined for future joint projects and agreements.
