Uzbekistan and Poland to hold session of intergovernmental commission

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- The sixth session of Polish-Uzbek intergovernmental commission on economic cooperation will be held in Tashkent in the first half of November 2013, the head of the Department on assisting trade and investment of Poland Embassy in Tashkent Slawomir Strzalkowski said.

He said that the commission will consider issues of boosting and diversification of mutual trade, perspectives of financial and economic cooperation, bilateral cooperation in agriculture, production of construction materials, pharmaceuticals and other regions.

It is also planned to hold a Polish-Uzbek Business Forum, which will be attended by business circles of two states. Slawomir Strzalkowski said it is expected that representatives of 20 Polish companies will take part in the event.

According to the statistics of Poland, trade turnover between Uzbekistan and Poland reached US$98.5 million in January-July 2013, which rose by 18% year-on-year.

He underlined that the more and more Polish firms express interest in Uzbek market. About 85% of trade turnover fells to share of Polish exports, which made up US$83.8 million in seven months of 2013.

Poland significantly increased exports of cattle (4 times), timber and cellulous materials (3.4 times), leather products (3.4 times), mineral products (1.5 times), products from plants (1.5 times) and transport (1.3 times).

About 30 of exports of Poland to Uzbekistan makes up cattle, 22% - machinery and equipment, 19% - chemical products, 8% - products from plants, and 7% - food products. Overall, Poland exports 17 types of products to Uzbekistan.

Uzbekistan’s exports to Poland fell 22% to US$14.8 million. About 35% of Uzbekistan’s exports to Poland were mineral products, 30% - cotton and products of preliminary processing, 21% - chemical products, 10% - food products, he said.

He said that Polish companies are interested in supply of various products into Uzbekistan, including machinery, equipment, agriculture equipment, chemical products, furniture, construction materials, pharmaceuticals, food, etc.

At the same time, Polish companies offer to participate in implementation of investment and other projects in such key industries of Uzbekistan as energy, renewable energy, exploration and mining of natural resources, modernization and re-equipment of machinery enterprises, agriculture sector and production of food, chemical, and light industry, etc.

Slawomir Strzalkowski said two Polish companies are holding negotiation son creation of the joint ventures. He did not disclose details of the negotiations, but added that one of the ventures will produce medicaments and the second – tiles and reinforcement rods.

At the same time, export potential of Uzbekistan also allows to offer more competitive products to Poland and other EU states.
