Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — On 17 September 2024, a meeting took place in Vienna, Austria, between Azim Akhmedkhadjaev, Director of the Atomic Energy Agency under the Cabinet of Ministers of the Republic of Uzbekistan, and Rafael Grossi, Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
The meeting focused on key issues regarding the development of nuclear energy in Uzbekistan, including the reorganization of the "Uzatom" Agency and the small modular reactor (SMR) construction project.
Preliminary work on the project has begun in collaboration with the Russian State Corporation "Rosatom," fully adhering to IAEA recommendations. The support for a tripartite approach was confirmed, ensuring compliance with international safety standards.
Additionally, plans for joint events with the IAEA on nuclear technologies, including small modular reactors, were discussed. These events aim to highlight the global importance of these technologies and attract interest from other countries.
Preparations are underway for the IAEA Director General’s visit to Uzbekistan, aimed at holding productive meetings and strengthening bilateral cooperation.
The IAEA and Uzbekistan will continue to work together on nuclear energy development and the implementation of projects, strictly following international standards and best practices.
