Uzbekistan amends Criminal Code to punish vehicle plate stealers
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- Uzbek President Islam Karimov signed a law on introduction of changes to article 227 of Crime Code of Uzbekistan. Legislative Chamber passed the law on 26 May 2009 and Senate approved it on 28 August.

The changes set responsibility for illegal possesses of state number plates for vehicle with the aim to use them to commit other crimes.

Now, stealing, destructing, damaging or hiding number plates, due to lucrative and other impulses, punished with fine up to 25 minimal size of salary or correctional works up to two years or six-month jail.

In case of the crime, entailing serious consequences, the defendant can be fined from 50 to 100 minimal size of salary or correction works from two to three years or three-year jail.

As of 1 August 2009, the minimal salary in Uzbekistan set at 33,645 soums.
