Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — On 10 January 2025, a delegation led by the Chairman of the Board of Uzbekhydroenergo, Abdugani Sanginov, visited the office of China Huaneng Group Co. HongKong, Ltd. (Huaneng) to strengthen cooperation and discuss ongoing and future joint initiatives.
China Huaneng Group Co. HongKong, Ltd., one of the five largest state-owned power generation companies in China, operates under the supervision of the State-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission of China’s State Council. The company is involved in energy generation, construction, operation, and electricity sales, ranking 238th on the Fortune Global 500 list.
During the meeting, Abdugani Sanginov and Huaneng Chairman Xiang Xue discussed the results of their current partnership and outlined future tasks.
A key point of discussion was the construction of the Korngitokai hydropower plant (HPP), with a capacity of 320 MW, to be located in the Bostanlyk district of Tashkent region.
To expedite project implementation, the parties signed a memorandum of understanding, agreeing to fast-track the approval of preliminary documents and financing conditions.
The implementation of this project will significantly enhance Uzbekistan’s energy balance. An official groundbreaking ceremony for the Korngitokai HPP on the Pskem River in Bostanlyk district is scheduled for 1 August this year. The ceremony will be held at a high level, with all preparatory work expected to be completed by then.
The construction of the HPP will be the first major high-capacity hydropower project in Central Asia based on sustainable development principles.
Upon completion, the plant is expected to produce 842 million kWh of electricity annually, supplying power to 281,000 homes and saving approximately 228 million cubic meters of natural gas. This will significantly boost the provision of clean energy for Uzbekistan’s growing population and expanding industries.
