Uzbekistan 30/11/2007 Uzbek woman candidate says country has bright future
Answering the question as to how the election campaign was going on in the country, Dilorom Toshmuhammadova said, among other things: "The participation of all political parities in the election is, above all, evidence that democratic processes are expanding in our society and that the supremacy of the law has been secured...The ongoing election campaign in the country can be divided into four stages in keeping with world standards. The first stage is the preparation stage. This stage is known by mobilization of party resources, activization of party work and strengthening its ideological essence. The second stage has to do with campaigning. It is this process that is now under way in our country. Our main goals at the moment are to broadly publicize the candidate’s her election platform."

She said social democracy ideas were the essence of her party’s platform. "Since I am a representative of the Adolat Social Democratic Party, our programme has been worked out on the basis of social democracy ideas. The main point, the essence of our programme, is the human factor; that is mobilization of the country’s intellectual potential to the economic and social development of the country," she said, adding that her programme was also directed at increasing women’s role in society.

Asked how she saw the future of the country, Dilorom Toshmuhammadova said: "Of course the future of our country is very bright. There are all grounds to say this: above all our country has great history and huge cultural heritage. Secondly, there are huge opportunities, natural resources, in our country; it has great economic potential. And finally, the greatest wealth of our country is, in my view, our citizens, our people. I believe that the human factor will be the greatest element in developing our country."

She said her platform gave priority to economic reforms and improving social security in the country. She also repeated that her programme was aimed at further increasing women’s role in society. "All the opportunities have been created in our country to increase women’s active role in our country, and to ensure that they can use their potential and opportunities. Women in our country are now being supported in a comprehensive way. Our main task is to ensure that all our women can use these opportunities," she said.

She praised the health care system in the country and said the reforms in this field should be continued. "Great changes have taken place in this field in our country so far," she said.

The question and answer session lasted for about 15 minutes and was immediately followed by election adverts for all the four candidates, including the incumbent president, Islam Karimov.
