Uzbekistan 15/02/2008 Uzbek envoy in UN invites states to attend Aral Conference
Mr Vahidov said the situation in Aral Sea Basis is one of ecologic catastrophes and it effects to climate of the region and its outside. He said that salt and dust storms destroy crop and plants, as well as its pasture performance. Uzbek official said the catastrophe hit fishing and hunting industries. Vahidov said it also affects life of people as it results in clean water shortage.

Uzbek envoy said Uzbekistan plans to organize an international conference dedicated to the Aral Sea problem and its effect to people, flora and fauna on 11-12 March in Tashkent. He said this is contribution of Uzbekistan in efforts to fight climate change and environment protection.

Mr Vahidov underlined that the conference will develop action plan on improvement of ecologic and social-economic situation in Aral Sea Basin. Ambassador invited the UN member-states to attend Tashkent conference and contribute to solve Aral Sea Basin problem.

Permanent Representative of Uzbekistan said the effective management of water resources can positively impact life of population, living near Aral Sea.

He said the population of Central Asia is increasing, but the volume of water and land remains unchanged. He said glacier of Pamir and Altay mountain systems lost 25% of ice reserves and the process is "intensively developing".

Ambassador said there is need in general scheme on water resource management in Central Asia and it requires development of international cooperation mechanisms.
