Uzbek envoy calls to take into account interests of all states at use of trans-boundary rivers’ resources
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- Permanent Representative of Uzbekistan at the UN Murad Askarov delivered a speech at the Second Committee of the 66th session of the UN General Assembly.

During his speech, Murad Askarov attracted attention of participants to economic development of Uzbekistan, assistance of the country to Afghanistan and called to take into account interests of all countries in use of trans-boundary rivers’ resources.

Uzbek envoy said that ecologic catastrophe at Aral Sea negatively impact social-economic development of all Central Asian region. He said that there are difficult ecologic, social-economic and demographic problems at Aral Sea Basin, which have global consequences and the UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon familiarized with the situation in 2010.

UN News Center said that he underlined that it is dangerous to implement large hydro power stations at upper course of Amu Darya and Syrdarya rivers, which create serious threat to security of population both in the view of ecologic, social and man-caused risks, and keeping the volume and regime of river flow.

He said that Uzbekistan’s position on the case is that interests of all countries, located at the basin of rivers, should be taken into account at use of resources of trans-boundary rivers. He recalled initiative of the Uzbek President on construction of small hydro power stations with the same capacity of large stations.
