Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- On 29 May 2019 Uzbekistan’s Ambassador Akmaljon Kuchkarov gave a briefing at the Foreign Ministry of Turkmenistan on the adoption of the UN General Assembly resolution on 28 May on cooperation between the International Fund for Saving the Aral Sea and the UN.
The event was attended by heads of ministries and departments, public organizations of Turkmenistan, heads of diplomatic missions and specialized UN institutions accredited in Ashgabat.
The ambassador congratulated the leadership of Turkmenistan on the adoption of a resolution on the initiative of the Turkmen side, particularly focusing the attention of the briefing participants on the mutual support of our countries for constructive proposals and initiatives within regional and international organizations. In particular, Uzbekistan welcomes and supports the initiative of Turkmenistan on the need to adopt a special UN program for the Aral Sea basin.
The head of the diplomatic mission of our country noted the timeliness and great significance of the initiative of President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev to create a Multi-Partner Trust Fund for Human Security for the Aral region under the auspices of the UN.
The briefing participants were informed about the practical measures taken by Uzbekistan to overcome the negative effects of the drying up of the Aral Sea, improve the socio-economic situation in the Aral Sea region, create favorable conditions for the population living in this region, as well as the goals and objectives of the State program for the development of the Aral Sea region for 2017-2021 .
The confidence was expressed that, based on the centuries-old traditions of our peoples in respect for nature and the joint rational use of water resources of transboundary rivers, the countries of Central Asia will be able to achieve truly breakthrough results in eliminating the consequences of the drying up of the Aral Sea and ensuring environmental well-being in the region.
