Uzatom Delegation Visits Belarusian Nuclear Power Plant

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — On 6 August, a delegation from the Agency for the Development of Nuclear Energy “Uzatom” visited the Belarusian Nuclear Power Plant. During the visit, the plant’s management presented key aspects of the operational facility to the Uzbek side and organized negotiations on issues relevant to the development of nuclear energy in Uzbekistan.

The Belarusian delegation provided a detailed overview of the entire Belarusian NPP project cycle: from technology selection and the establishment of regulatory and institutional frameworks to the stages of construction, commissioning, and daily management. Special attention was given to project management, interaction with regulatory bodies, nuclear and radiation safety, as well as the development of human resources for the sector.

The Uzbek delegation also toured the Belarusian NPP Training Center, where full-scale simulators identical to the plant’s control panels are used to model various emergency scenarios. This allows for effective staff training, regular retraining, and skill enhancement. Training includes simulation of different situations, helping to develop clear response protocols.

An important topic of discussion was public engagement—from conducting public hearings to raising awareness and promoting societal acceptance of nuclear energy. The parties exchanged experiences on establishing constructive dialogue with the public and popularizing the peaceful use of nuclear technologies.

Special emphasis was placed on workforce development. Uzbekistan expressed interest in fostering partnerships between specialized educational institutions of both countries to exchange expertise and jointly train specialists for the nuclear industry.

The Belarusian NPP, built under the project of the State Corporation Rosatom, was fully commissioned in 2023. The combined capacity of its two power units is 2400 MW. A critical safety feature of the plant is the integration of active and passive protection systems, ensuring resilience to various external and internal impacts. Each unit is equipped with a core melt localization device (“melt trap”) and other systems that operate autonomously even in the event of a complete power outage.
