Use of underground waters discussed in Uzbekistan
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- A seminar titled “Contribution of science and education to perspective sustainable use of underground waters in Uzbekistan” was held in Tashkent on 13 October 2011. The event was organized by Ecologic Movement of Uzbekistan and UNESCO office in Uzbekistan.

The press service of the Ecologic Movement of Uzbekistan said that representatives of Legislative Chamber of Oliy Majlis, Institute of Groundwater Hydrology and Engineering Geology, scientific establishments and international organizations participated at the event.

The importance of underground waters is increasing in last period. Underground waters are valuable natural resources and make up 95% of fresh water reserves. They mainly serve as water supply source for population. Currently, it is important to study underground waters to ensure sustainable use, especially in those areas with water shortage. It is also important to improve management of underground waters use.

In the places with water shortages, underground waters are only source of drinking water. Underground waters are also important for supporting economic and ecologic systems.

Underground waters are integral part of water resources of Uzbekistan and used for needs of population. Intensive development of agriculture and industry can negatively impact to quality of underground waters in various regions if water protection measures are not undertaken.

The main aim of the seminar is to familiarize with current state of underground waters in Uzbekistan, scientific-educational activity in use of underground waters and determining further perspectives on improving research methods and educational approaches with development of practical recommendations. During the seminar, the sides discussed issues of developing international cooperation, directed at deepening scientific-research potential in groundwater hydrology with introduction of new study methods. The sides considered issues of strengthening partnership relations in scientific-research and educational establishments with NGOs in protecting valuable underwater resources.

Participants gave practical proposals on improving scientific-research and educational potential in monitoring and using of underground water with introduction of ICT and modern methods of modeling and forecasting.

At the end of the seminar, the sides developed recommendations on sustainable and secure use of underground waters in modern conditions of environment change.
