USAID launches “Health outreach program” in Uzbekistan
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- On 23 November2010, Charge d'Affaires ad interim of the United States Embassy in Uzbekistan Duane C. Butcher, and Deputy Minister of Health Saidmurod Saydaliev, will participate in a roundtable to launch the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) Health Outreach Program (HOP), a five-year, US$2.3 million project.

HOP will provide technical assistance, training, and direct outreach services to increase access to quality HIV and tuberculosis (TB) prevention and treatment interventions among most at-risk populations.

The Resolution of the President of Uzbekistan “About Additional Measures to Increase the Efficiency of HIV prevention in Uzbekistan” and the "National Action Plan on Prevention of HIV-Infection Transmission in Uzbekistan” demonstrate that the fight against HIV infection is a top priority of the Government of Uzbekistan.

The objective of USAID’s HOP is to provide a complex package of services for HIV and TB prevention, in partnership with the Ministry of Health. Through informational activities, social support services and timely referral for HIV and TB diagnostic tests, HOP will assist Uzbekistan in achieving the United Nations Millennium Development Goals.

Based on the results of our local partners’ extensive experience working with most at-risk populations in Uzbekistan, USAID HOP combines international best practices and approaches to reduce the spread of HIV and TB in Uzbekistan. In Uzbekistan, HOP is implemented by “Project HOPE-The People to People Health Foundation, Inc.” in collaboration with the Ministry of Health, National AIDS Center, National DOTS Center, and the Institute of Health.

The Health Outreach Program is one of the many assistance projects supported by USAID. Since 1992, USAID has provided more than US$330 million in assistance to Uzbekistan.
