General David Petraeus’ visit to Uzbekistan Tuesday comes amid mounting US efforts to secure a new northern route to supply forces stationed Afghanistan.
The United States has secured assurances from Russia and Kazakhstan that it will able to ship supplies through their territory.
A ground supply route would also need to go through Uzbekistan before entering northern Afghanistan.
Supply routes to Afghanistan have become a critical issue in recent months amid growing militant attacks on the land routes through Pakistan.
