UNFPA organizes conference on population and development in Uzbekistan
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- A conference on socio-demographic processes in modern Uzbekistan, dedicated to the 15th anniversary of International Conference on Population and Development (ICPDF) held in Cairo, Egypt in 1994, was held in Tashkent on 11 December.

The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) in Uzbekistan, Women’s Committee of Uzbekistan, Institute of Economy of the Academy of Science of Uzbekistan and Women’s Assembly National Public Association organized the event.

The conference participants discussed such critical issues as socio-demographic development in the provinces of the country in light of ICPD Programme of Action implementation.

The main directions of work consisted of discussion on demographic situation in Uzbekistan and its change trends, family under protection of the state, linkages between socio-economic and demographic processes, population health, women and economics and population migration.

As a result of the conference a number of recommendations were developed and will be promoted for implementation among local authorities in the provinces of the country.

"The issues of population and development are under direct attention of the United Nations Organization," commented Fuad Aliev, UNFPA Assistant Representative in Uzbekistan. "Our conference is aimed at underlining the significance of ICPD as a historic forum that identified the approaches of international community to the issues of population and development and once again reconfirm the importance of ICPD Programme of Action for our country."
