UNESCO World Heritage Centre delegation visits Uzbekistan

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) —  A delegation from the UNESCO World Heritage Centre, led by its director Lazare Eloundou Assomo, has arrived in Uzbekistan. 

As part of their visit, a meeting focused on the preservation and development of Samarkand’s cultural heritage was held in the city. Participants included Gayane Umerova, Chairperson of the Foundation for the Development of Culture and Arts; Rustam Kobilov, Deputy Khokim of Samarkand Region; Fazliddin Umarov, Khokim of Samarkand; and Kamol Mukhtarov, Uzbekistan’s Permanent Representative to UNESCO. 

The event brought together leading cultural heritage experts, including representatives from the Cultural Heritage Agency, the architecture firm Wilmotte & Associés, and other international specialists. Discussions highlighted the importance of sharing experiences and applying global best practices to ensure sustainable development and the preservation of historical landmarks. 

Key projects aimed at safeguarding Samarkand’s unique heritage and developing its historic center were presented during the event. Particular emphasis was placed on revitalization concepts for iconic sites such as the Shakhi-Zinda Ensemble, Ulughbek Observatory, and other historically significant monuments of global cultural importance.
