UNDP Uzbekistan participates in celebration of Human Rights Day
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- In 1950 the United Nations General Assembly officially chose 10 December to be celebrated as the Human Rights Day. The date was chosen to honor the United Nations General Assembly's adoption and proclamation, on 10 December 1948, of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR), the first global enunciation of human rights.

All member states and organizations were invited to celebrate this day with human rights related events. This day is also celebrated in Uzbekistan, a UN member since 1992. UNDP in Uzbekistan, through its Human Rights Project, participated in several commemorating events organized by the national counterparts.

On 9 December Tashkent State Law Institute held a roundtable to commemorate the Human Rights Day and the Constitution Day (8 December). The professors, students and UNDP representatives discussed the topical issues on implementation of international standards and constitutional provisions on human rights in the Uzbek law. The Institute also held the competition on the knowledge of the UDHR and the Constitution among the students. Mr. Tokhir Samatov, a second year student of the Institute, who wrote an article on the Constitutional guarantees of human rights, won the competition.

On 10 December, a UNDP human rights project representative participated in the Human Rights Day roundtable organized by the Authorized person of the Parliament on Human Rights. The participants discussed the human rights agenda in the country in the context of the recent concept note of the President on the democratic reforms in the country.

On the same day, an annual commemorating conference took place at the University of the World Economy and Diplomacy. The conference, attended by a UNDP representative, provided an opportunity for students to present their papers on the issues of International human rights law, Constitutional law and legal clinical education.

The UNDP Project “Development of Capacities of National Human Rights Institutions” is aimed to strengthen national capacities for promotion and protection of human rights and access to justice in Uzbekistan. The Project will achieve its outputs through development of the capacities of the national human rights institutions to effectively fulfill their mandates, to support free legal aid and contribute to human rights awareness raising.
