Sports 27/04/2007 UNDP supports “Women and Sport” International Conference
The international conference "Women and Sport" gathered over 50 young leader athletes, aged between 18 and 35, as well as specialists from different sport and social organizations, and disable young leaders who shared the operational experience in the sphere of women’s participation in sport from Myanmar, Malaysia, Latvia, Chili, Kazakhstan, Chinese Taipei, Kenya, Iran, Guatemala, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan. Participation in this conference gave participants a chance to show, share, and further develop their leader potential.

The conference was organized in framework of UNDP and Special Olympics of Uzbekistan Project with the support of the Ministry of Cultural and Sport Affairs of Uzbekistan, the National Olympic Committee of Uzbekistan, the Women’s Committee, UNICEF and UNESCO representatives, and the Paralympics Committee of Uzbekistan. The Conference was conducted under the patronage of the International Olympics Committee.

The aim of the event was to raise awareness of the public to the ideas of young leaders about wider involvement of women in sports and promotion of the Millennium Development Goals through sports and physical culture. The participation of disabled young people in this conference gave them an opportunity express their vision and opinion about the activities and events which can stimulate the integration of intellectually and physically disabled people in a society.

UNDP Uzbekistan has been supporting the Special Olympics Uzbekistan from the very beginning of its activities in the country. In May 2004 in collaboration with the Ministry of Cultural and Sports Affairs of Uzbekistan a joint project was launched to promote the rights of individuals with mental challenges and facilitate their social integration.
