UNDP prepares study on "Digital Economy of Uzbekistan"

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — Digital economy expert Eileen Trenkmann visited Tashkent to conduct research on "The Digital Economy of Uzbekistan," according to UNDP Uzbekistan's press service.

This study is part of a joint project between the Ministry of Economy and UNDP, funded by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation.

The research focuses on analyzing artificial intelligence and digital entrepreneurship, with an emphasis on identifying key trends, challenges, and opportunities.

Upon completion, a report will be prepared, including recommendations on supporting digital startups, improving digital literacy, and specific measures for integrating artificial intelligence into the national economy.

Eileen Trenkmann noted that this is her second visit to Uzbekistan.

"Five years ago, I conducted a study on the entrepreneurial ecosystem, and much has changed since then. We see not only urban development but also significant shifts in the entrepreneurial sector," the expert shared.

She highlighted that, for example, five years ago, there were no venture funds or business angel activity in the country.

Only a few participants were engaged in incubation and research, primarily with the support of the Ministry of Innovations.

"Since then, the Ministry of Digital Technologies has emerged and is actively working in this field. Additionally, other ministries issue new regulations every month to support the startup ecosystem, digital entrepreneurship, and AI development," added Eileen Trenkmann.

"Just two weeks ago, for instance, two new regulations were enacted to support entrepreneurship and develop artificial intelligence. We see active efforts underway in this area," she observed.

"Considering everything I’ve learned over the past five days, I will prepare a report that will not only help UNDP refine and expand its programs but also assist the government in identifying potential gaps and shortcomings that need addressing.

In this process, I will also examine international practices to incorporate them into the report, which may serve as a guide for future actions," the expert concluded.
