The event was attended by members of the Legislative Chamber and the Senate of Oliy Majlis, representatives of ministries, departments, research institutions, teaching staff of higher educational institutions, international organizations accredited in Uzbekistan, legal specialists, and experts from Uzbekistan.

The purpose of the event was to unite the efforts of different stakeholders towards the development of parliamentarism of the Legislative Chamber and the Senate of Oliy Majlis of Uzbekistan. The development of parliamentarism is an integral component of the UNDP services in Good Governance. Activities in this area aim at improving the representative, legislative and oversight functions of parliamentary institutions in the governance process.

This area is supported in the UNDP Strategic Plan for 2008-2011, which emphasizes the importance of representative bodies at local, regional and national levels and the need to strengthen mechanisms for responding to emerging issues and ensuring public accountability. Stability and efficiency of these mechanisms plays a distinctive role in ensuring the adequate recognition of problems and interests of the poor, women and other marginalized groups, as well as responding to them.

The Vice-chairperson of the Senate of Oliy Majlis, M.A. Radjabova, Deputy Speaker of the Legislative Chamber of Oliy Majlis, U.N. Mukhammadiev, UNDP Assistant Resident Representative, Sitara Syed, as well as members of the Legislative Chamber and the Senate spoke at the event.

The presentation of the handbook "Fundamentals of Oliy Majlis (Parliament) of the Republic of Uzbekistan" was also part of the event, followed by discussions of the further improvement of cooperation among stakeholders for successful execution of the project.
