UNDP expands collaboration with regional monocenters in Uzbekistan on green energy

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) is actively supporting the development of energy efficiency and renewable energy in Uzbekistan, including the training of qualified specialists in this field.

In August-September 2024, 16 regional monocenters "Ishga Marhamat" received training equipment for the installation of photovoltaic (PV) panels and solar water heaters (solar collectors).

The equipment includes methodological materials (presentations, training manuals, and handouts), as well as models of solar panels and solar collectors for practical training sessions. The handover ceremonies took place at monocenters in Bukhara, Karshi, Namangan, Nukus, and Samarkand.

This handover follows a series of training sessions conducted in October-November 2023 for electricians and plumbers from the monocenters, focusing on working with renewable energy sources.

These activities are part of the UNDP project and the Ministry of Construction and Housing and Communal Services of the Republic of Uzbekistan, titled "Assistance in the Development of Energy-Efficient Rural Housing," funded by the Global Environment Facility (GEF). The project also involves the Ministry of Employment and Poverty Reduction of the Republic of Uzbekistan. The collaborative efforts aim to implement the Presidential Decree of 16 February 2023, "On Measures to Accelerate the Introduction of Renewable Energy Sources and Energy-Saving Technologies in 2023."

Given that Uzbekistan enjoys around 300 sunny days a year, utilizing free clean solar energy is essential. This is especially relevant in rural areas where traditional electricity may be unavailable, and alternative energy sources can address many infrastructure challenges. UNDP and its partners are working to address the shortage of skilled professionals in this field.

The provided equipment will enable participants to acquire essential skills in the installation, assembly, and maintenance of solar panels and solar collectors, which will promote sustainable energy and create green jobs.

The training equipment provided by UNDP to the regional monocenters "Ishga Marhamat" will allow the centers to train local specialists independently. The training course covers topics such as the principles of solar collector operation, requirements for electricity supply and safety, features of battery storage, and more. Practical training will be conducted using the provided models, helping students develop installation and assembly skills for solar panels and solar collectors.

The UNDP project "Assistance in the Development of Energy-Efficient Rural Housing" aims to transition the rapidly developing housing sector in Uzbekistan to a more sustainable development path, reducing greenhouse gas emissions by developing, piloting, and expanding green financing mechanisms for energy-efficient technologies and materials. This will increase demand for energy-efficient and low-carbon housing among the Uzbek population.

The project’s goal is to provide improved and affordable living conditions for the regions of Uzbekistan without harming the environment.
