UN General Assembly adopts a resolution on cooperation with the SCO

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- On 30 August, the UN General Assembly on Friday adopted a resolution without a vote on developing cooperation with the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO). The resolution was co-sponsored by members of the SCO - Russia, India, Kazakhstan, China, Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan, the TASS agency reported.

The adopted document notes the "constructive role of the SCO in ensuring peace and sustainable development, promoting the development of regional cooperation and strengthening good neighborly relations."

UN member states also instructed the Secretary General to conduct regular consultations with the SCO leader with a view to strengthening dialogue, cooperation and coordination among organizations, as well as "submit a report to the General Assembly at its 75th session on the implementation of this resolution."

"[The General Assembly] invites specialized agencies, organizations, programs and funds of the UN system to cooperate with the SCO in the interests of joint implementation of programs aimed at achieving their goals," the text of the adopted document says.

Advisor to the Russian Permanent Mission Alexander Popov, who submitted a draft resolution to the General Assembly, underlined that strengthening cooperation with the UN is an important vector of the work of the SCO. “The traditional broad support for the resolution confirms the importance that is attached to the ongoing development of cooperation between the UN and the SCO,” the diplomat stated. “We are convinced that it will serve as a fruitful joint work of the two organizations in the name of security and stability in the world.”

"Russia, as the chairman of the SCO in 2019-2010, intends to energetically seek its further consolidation, increase its role in international and regional affairs, strengthen cooperation in the fields of politics, security, economy and humanitarian cooperation," he said.
