Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — On 11 January 2025, a collision occurred between two trams at the Gare Centrale station, located near the central train station in Strasbourg (France).
Approximately 50 people were injured in the incident, five of whom are in critical condition. According to René Sillier, the director of the fire and rescue service in the Bas-Rhin department, the injuries included head abrasions, fractures, and dislocations. Nearly half of the injured were hospitalized.
Over 130 firefighters are working at the scene. Tram services in both directions at the station have been suspended. The police have cordoned off the area in front of the train station, and bus services have also been halted.
The preliminary cause of the accident is believed to be an error in switching the track points. An investigation is currently underway to determine the exact cause of the collision.
Strasbourg’s Mayor Jeanne Barsegian visited the site, thanked the emergency services, and urged the public to avoid interfering with the work of the rescuers.
This is the first significant tram collision in Strasbourg since tram services were resumed in 1994. Local residents are advised to avoid the area around the central station to facilitate the work of emergency services.
