Uzbekistan 24/02/2009 Turkmen President’s visit to Uzbekistan to strengthen ties: Foreign Ministry
Uzbek President Islam Karimov
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- Upcoming official visit of Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov to Uzbekistan scheduled on 24-25 February will “give a boost to the further development of mutually beneficial cooperation and strengthen more fraternal ties and good neighborliness between peoples,” the Turkmen Foreign Ministry said.

Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan established diplomatic relations in 1993. Progressive development of Turkmen-Uzbek relations is based on constant political dialogue, extension of trade-economic partnership, as well as close interaction of humanitarian cooperation, the Turkmen Foreign Ministry said. Basis is the package of contract-legal documents comprising of more than 80 acting interstate, intergovernmental and inter ministerial agreements and treaties.

Uzbek President Islam Karimov’s visit to Ashgabat in October 2007 and return visit of Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov to Uzbekistan in March 2008 were important stages of relations. As a co-author Uzbekistan actively supported the UN resolution initiated by Turkmenistan on Reliable and Stabile Transit of Energy Sources and Their Role in Ensuring Sustainable Development and International Cooperation. All member-countries of this authoritative international organization unanimously adopted the resolution on 19 December 2008.

One of important indices of dynamically developing bilateral partnership is foreign turnover increasing each year. Turnover increased 35% in 2008. Turkmenistan exports to Uzbekistan oil products, chemical, textile and agriculture production, plastic and plastic goods, technological equipment and other goods.

In its turn, Uzbekistan exports chemical production, construction materials, economic, electric and metal goods, equipment and transport means.

Effective format of bilateral interaction is the activity as part of the intergovernmental commission on economic cooperation. The third meeting of Turkmen-Uzbek commission was held in Ashgabat in early 2008. The National Exhibition of the Republic Uzbekistan was also held during this meeting. The regular fourth meeting of the intergovernmental commission on economic cooperation was held in Tashkent on 12-13 February 2009.
