Trump imposes new restrictions against 30 Chinese companies

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- US President Donald Trump introduced new restrictions against 30 Chinese companies, which, according to the US administration, are associated with the Chinese Ministry of Defense.

Effective from 11 January 2021, American citizens and companies are prohibited from buying any securities of firms associated with the Chinese military.

Beijing condemned Donald Trump’s decree, stating that they would resolutely defend the legitimate rights and interests of their companies. The Chinese authorities interpreted Washington’s actions as "pressure on Chinese companies."

Analyzing the decision of the head of the White House, experts note that in relations between the two countries there is an increase in contradictions on almost all issues of the bilateral agenda.

1) At the end of July 2020, 11 Chinese companies, which allegedly used US goods and technologies "in aggressive actions against Muslim minorities in the PRC", fell under American restrictions at once. In August of this year, another 24 companies were blacklisted by the United States due to the construction of military infrastructures in the South China Sea.

2) In September, the US Treasury Department ordered American companies to end any cooperation with the XUAR production building by the end of the month, which accounts for up to 85% (US$73.6 billion) of all cotton produced in China. Production company was accused of using forced labor in Xinjiang.

3) In response to the overt pressure from Washington on 26 October 2020, the PRC authorities imposed sanctions on a number of individuals and US defense enterprises involved in the sale of weapons to Taiwan in the amount of US$4.1 billion. US defense companies Lockheed Martin, Boeing and Raytheon fell under the restrictions. It is not excluded that it was this step of Beijing that pushed Washington to adopt new restrictive measures.

In general, according to experts, against the background of intensifying confrontations between the United States and China, the parties are increasingly introducing new restrictions as a lever of influence, thereby destroying opportunities for constructive dialogue.

Considering the established inter-party consensus regarding the PRC as a strategic competitor with the Democrats coming to power in 2021, experts predict that the Sino-American relations will not tolerate significant changes and the strategic confrontation will continue.
