On 2 June, five-day training-of-trainers workshop "Gender awareness and Convention on the elimination of all forms of discrimination against women" started its work in Charvak, Tashkent region.

Uzbekistan realized importance of achievement of gender equality as one of the main development indicators. Despite, Uzbekistan ratified Convention on the elimination of all forms of discrimination against women (CEDAW), its norms are not widely spread among public and law enforcement bodies.

In this regard, the educational events play key role to raise gender awareness and wide coverage of CEDAW norms.

UNDP’s project "The Legislative and Institutional Capacity Development for Women’s Empowerment in Uzbekistan" organized the training. The projected aimed to support and build the capacity of the government, civil society and mass media in reducing the gender gaps via raising awareness of and implementing the recommendations of the Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) Committee to Uzbekistan.

Ms. Malika Inakova, project manager of "The Legislative and Institutional Capacity Development for Women’s Empowerment in Uzbekistan", said: "Training-of-trainers will promote CEDAW norms in public. Over 100 applicants expressed interest to participant in training and only 28 of them were selected to attend it."

"Training aimed at revealing potential trainers, promoting gender awareness and knowledge on CEDAW norms and change of stereotypes of gender thinking among public and those, engaged with this issue in their professional activity," she said.

Ms Inakova said: "The most successful participants, who has good training skills, tactical to gender problems, spread CEDAW ideas and norms, will be attracted by UNDP project to carry out series of training in all regions of Uzbekistan. Thereby, knowledge on CEDAW, mechanisms of its implementation will be disseminated among professional workers and public."
