Three 19th-20th century mosques demolished in Samarkand region

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — Serious violations in the preservation of cultural heritage have been uncovered in Samarkand Region, where three 19th-20th century mosques were demolished without proper authorization, and unauthorized restoration work was carried out on a historical monument.

According to the General Prosecutor’s Office of Uzbekistan, the total damage caused is estimated at 46.8 billion soums (approximately US$3.6 million).

The violations were identified during joint inspections conducted by the prosecutor's office and the Cultural Heritage Agency. In Kattakurgan District, the demolition of the Kushok Ota Mosque resulted in damage of 19.6 billion soums. In Urgut District, the Ahmad Yassavi and Khoja Urinboy mosques were also torn down, with damages amounting to 17 billion soums.

Additionally, unauthorized restoration of the Kulba monument in Samarkand District led to the loss of its historical value, causing 10.2 billion soums in damages.

Criminal cases have been initiated in connection with all incidents. The General Prosecutor’s Office has stated that monitoring efforts to protect cultural heritage sites are ongoing.
