Third time unlucky for Uzbeks
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- Uzbekistan’s home jinx against UAE continued as Sultan Al Menhali’s goal deep into stoppage time consigned the central Asians to a 1-0 defeat at Pakhtakor Stadium.

With both sides having already qualified to the AFC Asian Cup Qatar 2011™, the Group C encounter held little significance for either participant.

Uzbekistan had lost twice previously to their opponents at home in two World Cup qualifiers and it was third time unlucky for the hosts thanks to Al Menhali’s late intervention.

Uzbek coach Mirdjalal Kasimov had highlighted the lack of match readiness for the majority of his squad prior to kick-off with the domestic league yet to get under way.

And they were almost caught cold twice in the opening minutes as the UAE fashioned opportunities they were unable to take advantage of.

However, Uzbekistan slowly regained their composure and threatened in the 11th minute but midfielder Odil Akhmedov saw his shot well blocked.

One minute later, Alexander Geynrikh managed to beat a defender but saw his effort smartly saved by UAE keeper Majed Al Maqdami.

That proved to be the most significant action of a low-key opening 45 minutes as the entertaining encounter predicted by UAE chief Srecko Katanec failed to materialise.

The second period, however, proved a more lively affair that ended in stunning fashion for the visitors.

UAE almost went in front shortly after the interval but Mohammed Al Shehhi’s shot flew narrowly wide of the top left hand corner.

Geynrikh then wasted two chances at the other end to give Uzbekistan the upper hand before the game reached a dramatic conclusion.

In the third minute of stoppage time, former AFC Player of the Year Server Djeparov found himself with a shooting opportunity but although he managed to beat Al Maqdami, his strike unfortunately hit the post much to the anguish of the home supporters.

Almost immediately afterwards Ahmed Khalil, on as a substitute, forged down the right flank and was able to reach the byline before crossing into the box where fellow replacement Al Menhali was on hand to apply the finish and help UAE secure top spot in the group.
