Tashkent hosts roundtable on Uzbekistan’s MDG achievements
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- An international roundtable titled “Uzbekistan and Millennium Development Goals: achievements and perspectives” opens in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, on 16 September 2010.

Representatives of interested ministries, departments, public organizations and movements, members of Legislative Chamber and Senate, experts of UNDP, UNICEF, UNECSCO, WHO, and others are participating the event.

In 2000, Uzbekistan, along with 192 member states of the UN and 23 international organizations, signed the Millennium Declaration, which comprises of 8 goals and 21 tasks. Based on them, the separate priorities of social-economic development of the state and global interaction in improving well-being of population, quality medical service and sustainable ecological environment were developed.

Uzbekistan has been pressing towards achieving the tasks, envisaged in this Declaration. It is worth to note that Uzbekistan was fully realizing these tasks nine years before adaptation of the Declaration. These are population literacy, high quality medical services, poverty elimination, decreasing children mortality and others. After the adoption of Declaration, Uzbekistan deepened work in these directions and achieved significant successes.

For example, the Declaration puts task to achieve universal primary education worldwide both for boys and girls. Uzbekistan, which achieved this goal, developed plan on attracting youth to higher education. This is one of the many achievements of Uzbekistan within the MDGs.
