Sports 22/09/2009 Steelers will show attacking mettle vows Farias
Luiz Felipe Scolari
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- Coach Sergio Farias has promised Pohang Steelers will continue their attacking style in Wednesday’s AFC Champions League quarter-final first leg against Uzbekistan champions Bunyodkor in an attempt to find crucial away goals.

Pohang destroyed Newcastle Jets 6-0 in the last 16 and despite the quarter-final first-leg taking place at Bunyodkor’s JAR Stadium, Farias is determined to continue with his three-pronged attack.

Choi Hyo-jin plundered a hat-trick against Newcastle while Brazilian Denilson was also in devastating form and with Farias having a full squad at his disposal, the K-League title contenders will look to breakdown a Bunyodkor side weakened by the absence of suspended Brazilian full-back Edson Ramos.

“We don’t need to change our playing style, to get a good result we need to play an offensive game. Away goals count double so we need to be offensive.” said Farias (pictured).

“Both teams need a victory and both are capable of getting one. Bunyodkor have home advantage and this could give them more confidence to attack. But it also may be dangerous to attack too much in the first leg.”

A tight-lipped Bunyodkor coach Luiz Felipe Scolari, meanwhile, kept his cards close to his chest with several selection dilemmas facing the Brazilian.

Scolari must re-shuffle his defence for his first taste of AFC Champions League action with Edson Ramos out and Turkmenistan centre-back Gochguly Gochguliyev available after recovering from injury.

Victor Karpenko is expected to deputise for the Brazilian at right back, while up front, captain Rivaldo is set to support Anvar Soliev with Chilean striker Jose Luis Villanueva not registered for the Champions League.

“Pohang are a good team. If they want to play attacking football that is up to them,” said Scolari, who took charge of Bunyodkor shortly after May’s last 16 win over Iran’s Piroozi.

“Pohang have kept the same team together for four or five years and have strength in the entire squad. We unfortunately will be without Edson Ramos.”

Last year’s semi-finalists have won the first 23 games of the new Uzbekistan League season, but now must prove they can replicate their impressive domestic form on the continental stage with their highly-talented squad hoping to add another chapter to the brief but impressive history.

“Pohang has 37 years of history and we are just four years old, but we will still try and do our best.” added Scolari.

“They have much more experience in the Champions League, but that does not mean we will lose. We will try and play our game and will do our best to win. It is up to the players.”
