Sony to change its name for the first time in 60 years

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- Sony held an annual meeting of shareholders, following which it was decided to change the name of the company. Since 2021, according to the Gizchina portal, Sony will be called the “Sony Group”.

This is, as specified, the first in more than sixty years name change. The new name, as the shareholders are sure, will contribute to a wider positioning of the company.

Until then, the main field of Sony’s activity was the creation of electronic devices, but after rebranding, the company will begin to be more active in other areas. Ultimately, those same other areas should begin to bring companies the same money as electronics. “We decided to change the name to Sony Group in order to better meet the updated goals of our business. The new name will help increase the diversity of our activities,” said Yoshida Kenichiro, Sony CEO.

The company we know today as Sony was founded in May 1946. Then it was called Tokyo Telecommunications Industry Company. But pretty quickly it became clear that this name is hard to pronounce to foreigners. Then the leadership of the company came up with the word Sony - it comes from a combination of the words sonus (“sound” in Latin) and sunny boys (“sunny guys” in English). Interestingly, the English phrase sunny boys in Japanese sounds like "juvenile geniuses."
