Senator raises legislative concerns in Uzbekistan’s insurance sector

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — Senator Kutbiddin Burkhanov has submitted a formal inquiry to the Government addressing serious legislative inconsistencies affecting citizens in the insurance sector.

According to the inquiry, contradictions between certain laws and by-laws are leading to the denial of legitimate claims by insurance companies. One case involved a citizen who had insured a vehicle with an unlimited number of drivers, but was denied compensation after a traffic accident because the policy did not list the vehicle owner's son as a driver.

However, current legislation does not require close family members to be named individually in the insurance policy. Furthermore, a Presidential Decree issued in 2019 eliminated the need for notarized powers of attorney between close relatives.

These legal ambiguities have caused public discontent, as evidenced by over 100 citizen complaints received by the National Agency for Advanced Projects in 2023.

In his inquiry, Burkhanov suggested that amendments to the rules established by Cabinet of Ministers Resolution No. 141 of 24 June 2008 could provide a solution.

The Government has been asked to clarify the measures being taken and their outcomes. The Senate Committee on Defense and Security will review the response and make a decision based on the findings.
